Estonia Extends Russia Border Restrictions Indefinitely, Citing Security

Estonia has indefinitely extended the restricted operating hours at its border crossings with Russia. The Narva, Koidula, and Luhamaa crossings now operate only between 07:00 and 19:00, a 12-hour window, and the restrictions have been extended to railroad border crossings as well. Interior Minister Igor Taro cited security reasons for the decision.

Border crossing traffic has already declined significantly, falling 13% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The restrictions reflect broader tensions along Estonia's eastern border and align with measures taken by other Baltic states to limit movement with Russia.

Russia has further contributed to the reduction in cross-border movement by closing seven of its nine rail border crossings with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia from July 1 of this year. The closures have effectively severed much of the remaining rail connectivity between Russia and the Baltic and Nordic countries.
