EU Launches €115 Million AGILE Defense Innovation Grant Program
The European Union officially launched the AGILE (Advanced Growth for Innovation in the European Defense) program on October 12, 2026, offering €115 million in grants to support research and development in European defense technology startups, SMEs, and research institutions.
Program Details
The AGILE grants will fund projects in priority areas including autonomous systems, cyber defense, electronic warfare, advanced materials, and satellite communication technologies. Applicants can receive between €500,000 and €5 million per project. The program is designed to reduce European dependence on non-EU military technology suppliers and strengthen the EU's defense industrial base.
Strategic Context
The AGILE program is part of the EU's broader effort to build a capable European defense industrial and technological base (EDTIB). It complements existing programs such as the European Defence Fund (EDF) and is designed to fast-track promising technologies from concept to prototype. The program comes amid a major European rearmament push following the lessons of Russia's war in Ukraine.
