A new European weather satellite, designated MTG-I2 (Meteosat Third Generation Imager 2), has successfully launched into space, marking a significant step forward in Europe's capacity to monitor and forecast severe weather events.
The satellite is designed to detect developing thunderstorms at an earlier stage than previously possible, enabling meteorological agencies to issue warnings with greater lead time. Improved flash flood prediction is among its primary goals — a capability that has become increasingly critical given the rising frequency of extreme precipitation events across Europe and beyond.
MTG-I2 also carries advanced sensors for wildfire detection. By continuously scanning vast areas with high-resolution infrared imaging, the satellite can spot heat signatures from newly ignited fires within minutes, giving emergency responders a crucial head start in mobilizing resources.
The satellite is part of the broader Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) program, a joint initiative of EUMETSAT and the European Space Agency (ESA). It will complement the MTG-I1 satellite, which has already been operational since 2023, providing redundancy and expanded coverage across Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic.
Meteorologists and civil protection agencies across the continent have welcomed the launch. Improved real-time data from geostationary orbit is expected to directly enhance national weather forecasting models, which in turn feed into early warning systems used by governments to protect lives and infrastructure during extreme weather events.
