George Russell delivered a commanding drive at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, leading the Austrian Grand Prix from start to finish to claim his third victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Mercedes driver managed his pace masterfully and maintained the lead despite pressure from Max Verstappen in the closing stages.
Max Verstappen applied late pressure but could not find a way past Russell, settling for second place and extending Red Bull's points haul. Carlos Sainz completed the podium for Ferrari, having executed a well-timed pit strategy that jumped several rivals. The result leaves the constructors' standings tightly contested between Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari.
Kimi Antonelli, who started fourth, suffered a mid-race brake issue that dropped him to sixth. His podium absence allowed Russell to close the gap in the drivers' championship to 40 points with eight rounds remaining. Antonelli leads the standings by 40 points over Russell, with Verstappen a further 12 points adrift in third.
Russell's win continues a strong run of form for Mercedes, who have now won four of the last six races. The Austrian GP was notable for its intense battles in the midfield, with several dramatic overtakes in the final ten laps. The next race is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 6.
