Germany Eyes Algeria as Key Energy Partner Amid Diversification Push

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Algiers on a two-day visit aimed at deepening energy and trade ties with Algeria, Germany's third-largest natural gas supplier outside Europe.

Strategic Energy Shift

Berlin has been actively diversifying its energy imports since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Algeria, with its extensive pipeline infrastructure connecting to Southern Europe, has emerged as a critical alternative. Wadephul signed a framework agreement on long-term LNG supply and committed Germany to investing in Algerian hydrogen production capacity.

Trade and Geopolitics

Beyond energy, the visit addressed migration management cooperation and German support for Algeria's infrastructure modernization. Algeria is positioning itself as a pivot state in North Africa — balancing ties with Russia and China while deepening economic partnerships with the EU. The deal is seen in Berlin as a strategic win, though environmental groups criticized continued investment in fossil fuel supply chains.
