Houthis Push Toward Bab al-Mandab, Threatening Global Shipping

Houthi military forces have made significant advances toward the Bab al-Mandab strait, the narrow waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, in a move that threatens to disrupt global shipping.

Military analysts report that Houthi units have moved closer to the strait's western shore, positioning themselves to potentially interdict commercial vessels. The strait handles approximately 12% of global trade annually.

The development comes after months of Houthi drone and missile attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, which have already forced many shipping companies to reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope.

Western naval forces in the region have been placed on heightened alert. The US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian has increased patrol frequency in response to the Houthi advance.

International shipping associations warn that a Houthi presence at Bab al-Mandab could effectively close the Red Sea route, with severe implications for global trade, energy markets, and consumer prices.
