Hungary Tells EU It Will Keep Sheltering Ukrainian Military Draft Evaders

1 min read

Hungary has informed the European Commission that it will not comply with EU temporary protection rules that bar member states from sheltering Ukrainians who have outstanding military obligations, according to EC spokesperson Markus Lammert. Budapest will invoke its right to partial non-application of the directive.

The move deepens Hungary's standoff with EU partners over Ukraine policy. The country intends to continue accepting Ukrainian men of military age who flee conscription.
