Israel announced on Wednesday the opening of tenders for a construction project in a strategically significant area east of Jerusalem — a zone that, if developed, would sever the territorial continuity of the occupied West Bank, cutting it effectively in two. The project has long been condemned by the international community and Palestinian leaders.
Building in this area east of Jerusalem would divide the northern and southern halves of the West Bank, making it significantly harder to establish a contiguous Palestinian state. Settlement construction in the occupied West Bank is considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.
Palestinian authorities and several European governments condemned the announcement, arguing the timing escalates tensions during an already volatile period. Israel has not publicly responded to criticism from foreign governments.
