Nepal Flood Survivors: We Have No Connection to Kathmandu

People from communities devastated by flooding and mudslides in Nepal have shared harrowing accounts of their experiences, describing complete isolation from the capital and a desperate wait for help that has been slow to arrive.

DW reporters who managed to reach parts of the affected region spoke with families anxious about relatives in more remote areas. Many described hearing the mudslide at night, a roaring sound that preceded catastrophic destruction within minutes.

A Nepalese government minister acknowledged frankly that the state's emergency response infrastructure is not equipped for a disaster of this scope. The remote geography of the Himalayan region makes it one of the most challenging environments in the world for disaster relief.

Relief organizations are calling for increased international support. Food, clean water, medical supplies, and temporary shelter are among the most urgent needs as displaced families struggle to survive.
