Russian Drone Strikes Near Poland's Border, Polish Jets Scrambled
A Russian reactive drone struck Ukrainian territory on September 28, 2026, approximately 2 kilometres from the Dorohuski border crossing with Poland — near the village of Yahodyn in the Volyn region. Polish military aviation was put on alert, and the airports of Rzeszow and Lublin were temporarily shut down.
Poland's Response
Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiak-Kamysz confirmed the incident via social media, stating that the drone hit Ukrainian territory about 2 km from the Polish border crossing at Dorohuski. He emphasized that no violation of Polish airspace occurred. After the threat passed, Polish aircraft returned to base and air defence systems reverted to observation and standby mode.
Damage to the Border Checkpoint
A later update confirmed that the reactive drone strike damaged the entry building of the Yahodyn checkpoint terminal. Volyn regional governor Roman Romaniuk reported damage to the checkpoint building itself, though no injuries were reported. The checkpoint is located in the village of Starovoitove in the Kovel district.
This incident follows a similar near-miss on September 17, when a Russian drone fell near a fuel station in the same village. The repeated proximity to Poland's border has heightened concerns among NATO allies.
