Shell Hits Bus and Border Post at Ukraine-Moldova Line

1 min read

A Russian projectile struck a passenger bus and border checkpoint booth on the Ukraine-Moldova border, injuring at least one border guard. The strike caused significant structural damage to the crossing facility and raised fresh concerns about Russia's targeting of civilian infrastructure near its borders.

Attack at the Checkpoint

The incident occurred at a border crossing point between Ukraine and Moldova. Both a stationary bus and the checkpoint structure were hit. Images shared by Ukrainian border services showed debris across the crossing area and a damaged vehicle near the booth. A border protection officer was wounded and received medical treatment on-site.

Civilian and Humanitarian Routes at Risk

The crossing serves as a critical transit point for civilians and humanitarian supply routes into Ukraine. Moldova has been on heightened alert since Russian drones began repeatedly approaching or crossing its airspace during strikes targeting southern Ukraine. The country hosts hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees and has sought EU membership partly in response to the security threat.

Pattern of Cross-Border Strikes

Monday’s incident fits a broader pattern of Russian strikes near or into the territory of neighbouring states. Romania has scrambled fighter jets on multiple occasions after debris or unidentified objects approached its airspace. Ukraine’s border protection service said all checkpoints in affected regions are operating under heightened security protocols.
