Slovak PM Fico Announces Ukraine Trip and Plans for Russia Talks
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on October 14, 2026 that the next round of intergovernmental talks between Slovakia and Ukraine would take place in Lviv on November 5. At the same time, he revealed that his government was finalizing preparations for separate negotiations with Russia.
Lviv Summit Announced
The talks in Lviv will be the latest in a series of regular bilateral consultations between Slovakia and Ukraine. Fico described the meeting as an opportunity to address bilateral economic and energy cooperation, particularly pressing given the ongoing war and its impact on regional energy security.
Fico's Dual Diplomatic Track
The Slovak premier, who has been one of the most vocal EU critics of unconditional support for Ukraine, framed the Russia talks as part of his government's policy of engaging "in all four directions." His preparedness to negotiate with both Kyiv and Moscow simultaneously reflects the complex diplomatic balancing act Slovakia has pursued since the beginning of the conflict.
