SpaceX, the aerospace company founded and led by Elon Musk, has opened a major tender offer that will allow employees, early investors, and select shareholders to liquidate a portion of their holdings. Sources familiar with the transaction say the offer values SpaceX shares at approximately $285 each, implying a total company valuation exceeding $400 billion — a figure that would make SpaceX the most valuable private company in history.
SpaceX has long remained private despite enormous growth in its business lines — rocket launches, the Starlink satellite internet service, and the development of the Starship vehicle intended for missions to the Moon and Mars. The company has periodically conducted insider share sales to provide liquidity for staff and early backers without pursuing a stock market listing. This latest round is substantially larger than previous sales, reflecting both the company's rapidly growing revenues and strong investor demand for exposure to its business.
Analysts attribute much of the valuation to Starlink, which now serves over 7 million subscribers worldwide and is expanding into maritime, aviation, and defence markets. SpaceX is also the preferred launch provider for numerous commercial and government customers, including NASA. An IPO has repeatedly been rumoured but deferred; Musk has previously said Starlink could eventually go public separately. Regulatory filings linked to the tender offer show that institutional investors including several sovereign wealth funds are among the buyers.
