UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was presented with a gun and ammunition as a diplomatic gift by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the NATO summit held in Turkey. The weapon has not been brought back to the United Kingdom and has instead been left with British officials stationed in Turkey.
The exchange of gifts between heads of state is a long-standing diplomatic tradition. However, the nature of this particular gift — a firearm and ammunition — attracted considerable attention. British officials confirmed that the weapon would remain in Turkey in line with UK regulations regarding the import of weapons.
The NATO summit brought together leaders from across the alliance to discuss matters of collective security, and the meeting between Starmer and Erdoğan was one of many bilateral encounters on the sidelines of the main summit proceedings.
The summit in Turkey has served as a major diplomatic gathering, with UK Prime Minister Starmer also holding talks with other world leaders on the margins of the event. Separately, it was reported that US President Donald Trump also used the summit to press NATO allies on matters including his approach to Iran and the issue of Greenland.
The gift from Erdoğan adds an unusual footnote to the diplomatic proceedings, although British officials have indicated no issues in managing the receipt of the item in accordance with existing legal frameworks.
