Tour de France 2026 Final Stage Shortened as Wildfires Hit Security

The organizers of the 2026 Tour de France announced an unexpected change to the race's grand finale on Sunday, shortening the decisive Stage 21 from its planned 133 kilometers to just 89 kilometers after French security forces were diverted to assist with record wildfire evacuations in the southwest of the country.

What Changed — and Why

Stage 21 was originally designed to begin in Thoiry, a town west of Paris, before winding into the capital for the traditional finale on the Champs-Élysées and the signature Montmartre circuit. Under the revised plan, the stage will now begin directly on the Champs-Élysées with two early laps before riders tackle the iconic Montmartre climb that was added to the Tour's final stage in recent editions.

The change was forced by the Ministry of the Interior, which redeployed gendarmerie and police from Tour de France security duties to support evacuation and perimeter control operations around the massive wildfires burning in the Gironde department near Bordeaux. More than 250,000 people have been evacuated in France, and the fire is advancing to within 15 kilometers of Bordeaux itself.

"Due to exceptional circumstances caused by wildfires currently burning in France, and the redeployment of security forces to affected areas, the start of Stage 21 has been relocated," Tour de France organizers ASO said in a statement.

Montmartre Circuit Survives

Despite the disruption, the most dramatic section of the final stage — the three-lap Montmartre circuit through the steep streets of Paris's artistic hill — will still be contested. The Montmartre circuit, introduced in recent years to add spectacle and tactical interest to what was traditionally a ceremonial procession, features a sharp climb of roughly 130 meters over 1.9 kilometers.

For sprinters who have dominated the final-stage sprint on the Champs-Élysées in the past, the shortened stage and retained Montmartre circuit still represents a significant opportunity. For General Classification contenders, the stage offers little GC action but remains an important prestige finish for the race's overall story.

A Tour Shadowed by Fire

The 2026 Tour de France has been shaped in part by the wildfire emergency gripping France this summer. Earlier stages in the race's second week were also subject to route adjustments due to fire risks in the Pyrenees and Massif Central, making this one of the most disrupted Tour editions in living memory from an external events standpoint.

The race winner will be crowned after the stage regardless of the route change, with the podium ceremony on the Champs-Élysées expected to go ahead as planned, pending any further emergency developments.
