UK Provides 100 Million Pound Winter Air Defense Package for Ukraine with Patriot Missiles

The United Kingdom announced it will provide Ukraine with a winter air defense package worth 100 million pounds (approximately 116 million euros) to help protect against Russian attacks ahead of the cold season. The package is being delivered through the PURL mechanism, under which allied nations purchase weapons from third parties on Ukraine's behalf.

According to the British government, the package includes Patriot air defense interceptors, large-caliber artillery shells, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The weaponry is specifically designed to bolster Ukraine's ability to defend against Russian missile and drone strikes during winter, when energy infrastructure becomes a prime target.

PURL Mechanism

The PURL (Partnership for Ukrainian Recovery and Logistics) mechanism allows allied countries to coordinate and fund arms purchases from manufacturers globally for direct delivery to Ukraine. This approach enables faster procurement compared to direct bilateral transfers.

The announcement comes as Ukraine faces intensified Russian air attacks. Overnight on September 8, Russian forces launched anti-ship, ballistic and cruise missiles, with Ukrainian air defenses reportedly shooting down 175 aerial targets.
