UK Defence Secretary Healey Resigns Over Military Funding Dispute

British Defence Secretary John Healey resigned on Thursday, citing the government's failure to commit adequate resources to the UK's armed forces at a moment of intensifying global security threats, particularly from Russia.

The Resignation Letter

In his letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Healey wrote: "You have been unable, and the Treasury has been unwilling, to commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats." He said the Defence Investment Plan he was finally presented with "falls well short of what is required for defence and the country at this dangerous time."

NATO Pressure and Growing Threats

The resignation comes as NATO allies face mounting pressure to increase defence spending. Just months ago, NATO leaders agreed on a target of 3.5% of GDP on defence by 2035. Healey, in his letter, reminded Starmer of British intelligence assessments indicating Russia could be ready to attack NATO member states as soon as 2030.

The UK is already co-leading a multinational Strait of Hormuz mission with allies in the Middle East, while also taking on leadership of NATO's Arctic Sentry operation. Healey argued that delivering on those commitments with a underfunded military was impossible.

Political Fallout

Healey's departure dealt a fresh blow to Starmer's already beleaguered government, which suffered heavily in recent local elections. Dan Jarvis has been named as the new Secretary of State for Defence.

Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch called the situation "shocking," and Green Party leader Zack Polanski described the government as being "in chaos, unable to govern, with no leadership." The resignation deepens questions over whether London can sustain its international NATO commitments under current spending trajectories.
