In a strategic move to bolster national resilience, Ukraine and Bulgaria are jointly developing a new "energy corridor." This initiative is designed to serve as a vital backup supply route for Kyiv, with the capacity to deliver up to 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky unveiled the details during a joint press briefing in the capital with Andrey Gyurov, the Acting Prime Minister of Bulgaria. The project, which has seen extensive ministerial-level discussions between Kyiv and Sofia, aims to safeguard Ukraine against potential supply chain disruptions.

Securing Energy Independence

"This corridor will be technically equipped – we hope – by the end of the year," Zelensky stated. "For us, this is very important and can be an alternative if there are blockages by some representatives of Europe. As for gas, this corridor can be at the level of about 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year. For us, these are 'energy' security guarantees."

Broader Bilateral Cooperation

The energy initiative is part of a broader strengthening of ties. On March 30, the two nations held their inaugural intergovernmental consultations, culminating in a comprehensive roadmap for cooperation spanning both the energy sector and maritime security.

Furthermore, the leaders formalized a bilateral security agreement. In a move to improve civilian connectivity, Ukraine and Bulgaria also announced plans to launch a test run of a passenger train traversing through Romania this upcoming summer.
