Ukraine Cabinet Approves Monument to Hetman Mazepa on Kyiv's Shevchenko Boulevard

1 min read
Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has approved plans to install a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa on Kyiv's Shevchenko Boulevard, at the site where a statue of Lenin previously stood before its removal. A public competition for the monument's design was announced simultaneously, inviting artists and sculptors to submit proposals. ## Historical Significance Mazepa, the 17th-18th century Ukrainian Cossack leader, is a figure of growing cultural and national significance in modern Ukraine. His alliance with Sweden against Russia during the Battle of Poltava in 1709 has been reassessed as a symbol of Ukrainian sovereignty. ## De-Communization Context The decision is part of Ukraine's broader de-communization policy and cultural re-orientation away from Soviet symbols. Replacing a Lenin statue with a Ukrainian historical figure reflects deliberate nation-building efforts underway since 2014, accelerated by the full-scale invasion.
