Ukraine Set to Purchase Additional IRIS-T Air Defense Systems from Germany

Ukraine has confirmed plans to acquire additional German-made IRIS-T air defense systems, building on an existing supply agreement with Germany. The IRIS-T SLM (Surface Launched Medium range) and IRIS-T SLS (Surface Launched Short range) systems have proven effective in intercepting Russian missiles and drones, and Ukraine is looking to expand its IRIS-T battery network across multiple cities and critical infrastructure sites.

The procurement announcement comes amid intensified Russian aerial attacks targeting Ukrainian power infrastructure ahead of winter. Germany has been one of Ukraine's most significant air defense suppliers, having already delivered multiple IRIS-T systems. Ukrainian officials praised the German system's reliability and integration capabilities with other NATO-standard air defense platforms. The new purchase is expected to be partially financed through European defense funds.
