Ukraine launched a major drone offensive overnight on June 12 — Russia's national holiday — striking energy and petrochemical infrastructure deep inside Russian territory. Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed its forces intercepted and destroyed 231 Ukrainian drones during the night.

Strikes on Tatarstan

In Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, two major facilities were hit. The Nizhnekamskneftekhim (NKNK) petrochemical plant — owned by Sibur and one of Russia's largest producers of synthetic rubber, plastics, and monomers — was struck, with monitoring channels confirming fires at the site. A separate strike hit the Taneco oil refinery, owned by Tatneft, which has a processing capacity of 16.2 million tons per year. Video footage showed two large fires with thick black smoke, with preliminary reports indicating damage to primary oil refining units and a tank farm. City celebrations for Russia Day in Nizhnekamsk were canceled, and Tatarstan Head Rustam Minnikhanov confirmed drones had reached the Trans-Kama region.

Samara Region Hit

Drones also struck the Togliattikauchuk chemical plant in Togliatti, Samara region, which produces synthetic rubber, monomers, and gasoline additives. Residents reported explosions lasting at least 40 minutes, with black smoke visible across the city. A regional "carpet" regime temporarily closed airspace at all altitudes. Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev confirmed no casualties in Samara.

Broader Attack

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported air defenses destroyed seven drones flying toward the capital. Russia's Defense Ministry said drones were downed over at least 15 regions, including Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, and occupied Crimea. Ukraine has not officially commented on the attacks, which are part of a sustained campaign to degrade Russia's oil processing capacity and disrupt war financing. Ukrainian officials have previously said that targeting refineries reduces the fuel available to Russian frontline forces.
