Ukraine's Budanov: Peace Talks Could Begin in October

Ukraine's military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov has signaled that trilateral peace negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and key Western partners could commence as early as October 2026, marking a potential turning point in the more than four-year conflict.

In statements reported by Ukrainian Pravda, Budanov indicated that diplomatic channels have been quietly activated over the summer, with preliminary frameworks being discussed at senior levels. The intelligence chief, known for cautious public statements, described the October timeline as realistic rather than aspirational.

The proposed format would involve direct representatives from Kyiv and Moscow alongside facilitators from the United States and key European Union member states. Such a structure mirrors earlier failed attempts at negotiation but includes new guarantees that previous frameworks lacked.

Western officials have not publicly confirmed the timeline but have intensified shuttle diplomacy in recent weeks. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously insisted that any negotiations must respect Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty as preconditions.
