US and Iran Agree on 60-Day Roadmap to Final Nuclear Deal in Switzerland

Negotiators from the United States and Iran concluded an all-night session in Switzerland on Sunday with a landmark agreement: a 60-day roadmap designed to pave the way for a comprehensive nuclear deal, according to mediators from Qatar and Pakistan who facilitated the talks at the Bürgenstock resort.

Key Provisions of the Agreement

Both sides agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz toll-free for at least 60 days and to end all active hostilities, including in Lebanon where fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group has continued despite the broader ceasefire framework. Tehran also agreed to invite International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors back into the country — a concession that US Vice President JD Vance called "a major milestone" and "the first step in permanently denuclearising Iran."

Working Groups Established

To advance the process, negotiators created three oversight working groups covering sanctions relief, nuclear compliance, and regional security. The groups are expected to hold their first sessions at the resort later this week as the parties race to meet the 60-day deadline.

Tensions Still Simmering

The agreement came after a tense standoff on Sunday when talks nearly collapsed over disagreements about the Strait of Hormuz toll structure and the terms for a ceasefire in Lebanon. US President Donald Trump, who was not present at the talks, had posted a warning earlier in the day threatening to "hit Iran very hard again" if negotiations failed — a message observers say both complicated and ultimately accelerated the breakthrough.

"This is the first step in permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran," Vice President Vance said after the session concluded.

Technical discussions are expected to continue through the week, with a final deal aimed for within the 60-day window. Both sides described the roadmap as binding but acknowledged that significant gaps remain on the scope of Iran's permitted uranium enrichment capacity.
