US-Canada Trade Talks Collapse as 50% Tariffs Take Effect

📅 Aug 22, 2026⏱ 1 min read💬 0 comments

Trade talks between the United States and Canada collapsed after days of intensive negotiations, and new US tariffs of 50 percent on Canadian goods worth approximately $28 billion took effect at midnight Washington time on Saturday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney quickly announced retaliatory tariffs on American products.

What Triggered the Breakdown

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer placed the blame on Ottawa, saying Canada had refused to finalize a deal on terms that had already been agreed upon. He added that the US offer would have given Canada better conditions than any other major trading partner. Carney rejected this characterization, calling the last-minute US conditions "unfair" and economically untenable. He said his government had sought the best possible outcome for Canada — "never a deal at any price."

USMCA Products Hit for the First Time

A particularly significant aspect of the new tariffs is that they apply to goods previously shielded by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The affected products include wine, hockey sticks, furniture, and dairy goods. This marks the first time Washington has extended punitive tariffs to USMCA-covered trade. The two countries are currently renegotiating the conditions for renewing the agreement. No further talks are scheduled at this time.
