US Court Bans Trump Administration's Taxpayer-Funded Campaign Ads
A US federal court on Sunday blocked the Trump administration from using taxpayer money to fund political television advertising, following weeks of controversy over government-paid commercials that promoted the president. The ruling was issued by Judge Jennifer Rochon of the Manhattan federal district court.
Background and Legal Challenge
The TV spots began airing in late September, financed from the federal budget, and drew condemnation from members of both political parties. Nonprofit organization Common Cause filed a lawsuit arguing the ads were political propaganda designed to support Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections rather than public service announcements.
According to a court filing submitted Saturday, the Trump administration had already planned to pull the ads before the court order was issued.
Reactions
President Trump called the commercials positive advertising for our great USA on Monday, but acknowledged they would no longer receive public funding. Common Cause President Virginia Kase Solomon stated: We will not stop until this administration is held fully accountable, and no president of any party can ever waste and abuse taxpayer funds for propaganda again.
