Vyshhorod Police Foil $10,000 Contract Acid Attack on a Woman
Law enforcement officers in Vyshhorod, near Kyiv, detained a man at the door of a flat who, according to investigators, was about to pour acid over a 52-year-old woman for $10,000. The Prosecutor General's Office and the National Police reported the case.
"The 21-year-old perpetrator was detained at the door of the woman's flat in Vyshhorod. He had sulphuric acid with him, which he planned to pour on the victim. The clients promised him $10,000 for carrying out the task," the Prosecutor General's Office said.
Two alleged organisers held in Kyiv
Police say the man was detained on October 22, moments before the attack. The same day, two more men, aged 37 and 54, were detained in Kyiv. Prosecutors call them co-organisers.
According to the investigation, the suspects watched the woman, studied her routes and daily routine. The acid had been tested in advance and hidden in a specially prepared cache. Prosecutors say the men acted for money, on commission.
What searches turned up
During searches, officers found the acid, an AKS-74U assault rifle, cash and phones. Police specify that the seized money amounted to $156,000. Computer equipment, draft notes and a car were also taken.
Investigators are checking whether the detainees were involved in other violent crimes and arsons, and whether they were preparing other especially grave crimes to order.
Suspicion and custody
On October 23 all three were notified of suspicion of attempted intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm. Police add that two of the men are suspected of organising the attack. A court ordered all three held in custody without the option of bail. More crime news is in our World section.
