Wembanyama Signs $252M Max Extension to Stay with San Antonio Spurs

Victor Wembanyama has committed his future to the San Antonio Spurs, agreeing to a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Friday. The deal includes a player option in the fifth season and represents the third-largest rookie extension in NBA history.

Wembanyama's Message to Fans

The 22-year-old French star celebrated the agreement on social media with a simple, heartfelt statement: "Spurs family, I'm here to stay. Whatever it takes." The extension came shortly after San Antonio was eliminated by the New York Knicks in five games in the NBA Finals, ending a run that gave Wembanyama invaluable experience on the sport's biggest stage.

"This has been a hell of a year in terms of experience," Wembanyama said after the Game 5 loss. "I don't think we could have learned more and gained more experience in one playoff run."

A Historic Season

Wembanyama's 2025-26 campaign justified every cent of his new deal. He played 64 games and set career highs in points (25.0 per game) and rebounds (11.5 per game), while adding 3.1 assists. His 3.08 blocks per game led the entire league, and he became just the seventh player in NBA history to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a single season.

The Spurs' starting lineup of Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Julian Champagnie posted a remarkable 21-3 record during the regular season, finishing as the second-best unit in the NBA. Wembanyama was named to the All-NBA First Team and earned his second All-Star selection — his first as a starter — and won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.

A Core to Build Around

The extension ensures that one of the most gifted players in NBA history remains the centerpiece of San Antonio's rebuild for the foreseeable future. The starting core returns intact for the 2026-27 season, giving the Spurs strong continuity as they push to contend for a championship. With Wembanyama locked in for five more years, the franchise's future looks exceptionally bright.
