Why Summer Sandals Can Cause Serious Foot Problems, Experts Warn

As summer temperatures rise and people reach for their favourite open-toed footwear, podiatrists are issuing warnings about the potential damage that poorly supportive sandals can cause over time. The concerns are particularly focused on flip flops and flat sandals that lack arch support, cushioning and heel stability.
Experts say wearing unsupportive footwear for extended periods can lead to plantar fasciitis, a painful condition affecting the ligament along the bottom of the foot, as well as heel pain, shin splints and even lower back problems as the body compensates for poor foot mechanics.
The warning is especially relevant for people who walk long distances in summer — on holidays, at festivals, or simply going about daily activities — as the cumulative impact of thousands of steps in inadequate footwear can be significant.
Podiatrists recommend choosing sandals with arch support, a heel cup and cushioning even in summer months, and limiting time spent in flat flip flops. They also advise stretching calf muscles and feet regularly, particularly after days when flat shoes have been worn.
