Zelensky announces new EU support packages expected this week

1 min read

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that new European Union support packages are expected to be formally unveiled this week, following ongoing consultations between Kyiv and Brussels. The packages are set to include both direct financial assistance and deliveries of additional air defense systems and equipment.

Details of Expected Support

Speaking during his nightly video address, Zelensky said the support packages are the result of intensive diplomatic engagement over the past month. He indicated that several EU member states are preparing bilateral contributions in addition to the broader EU framework package.

While exact figures have not been publicly disclosed, European officials have signaled that the financial component could include macro-financial assistance worth several billion euros, as well as equipment drawn from European Peace Facility funds. Air defense components are expected to include additional Patriot and IRIS-T system deliveries.

Context

The announcement comes as Ukraine continues to face intense Russian bombardment of its energy and civilian infrastructure. Zelensky has repeatedly called on Western partners to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems ahead of the coming winter, when attacks on energy infrastructure typically intensify.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell had separately confirmed last week that new defense support packages were in the final stages of coordination. An EU Council meeting scheduled for Thursday is expected to formally approve the measures.

Ukrainian Response

Ukrainian officials welcomed the news, with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stating that sustained European support remains essential to Ukraine's ability to defend itself and maintain economic stability. He noted that the continued EU commitment sends a strong signal to Russia that Ukraine's partners will not waver.
