Anthropic Report: Russia Used Claude AI for Pro-Kremlin Influence Operations in Central Africa

A new report from Anthropic, the American AI company behind the Claude model, has revealed that Russia allegedly exploited Claude to conduct pro-Kremlin disinformation campaigns in the Central African Republic. The report identifies coordinated influence operations spreading pro-Russian narratives across multiple African countries.

Beyond the Central African Republic, similar activities were documented in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Sudan, and other nations. The campaigns aimed to shape public opinion in favour of Russian military and political interests on the continent.

Anthropic said it detected and disrupted the operations. The case highlights the growing threat of state actors misusing commercial AI tools for covert influence campaigns on a global scale.
