A massive seven-month manhunt that gripped Australia has come to a bloody end. Dezi Freeman, the nation's most wanted fugitive and suspected police killer, was shot dead by officers following a tense three-hour standoff in the state of Victoria.
Special tactical units tracked the 56-year-old down on Tuesday morning (local time) to a remote property featuring a container-like structure near the town of Thologolong. According to police reports, a three-hour confrontation ensued before officers fatally shot Freeman, ending his months on the run.
Freeman had been on the run since late August 2025. The manhunt was triggered when he opened fire on police officers at his property near Porepunkah, located about 300 kilometers northeast of Melbourne. The tragic incident left two police officers dead and a third severely injured. The fallen officers were honored with a large state funeral in Melbourne in September 2025.
Following the murders, Freeman fled into a rugged national park known for its network of abandoned mines. The pursuit evolved into one of the most extensive police operations in Australian history, according to Police Chief Bush. The search involved:
During the manhunt, Freeman's wife, Amalia, with whom he shares three children, made a public appeal urging him to turn himself in. However, authorities suspect that Freeman managed to evade capture for so long with the assistance of local residents who sympathized with his anti-government stance.
Freeman was heavily associated with the "Sovereign Citizens" movement, an anti-government ideology akin to the German "Reichsbürger" scene. Court documents and media reports described him as a convicted firearms fanatic who aggressively rejected state authority.
While the police have not officially disclosed the specific reason for the initial search of Freeman's home last summer, authorities confirmed that the officers involved in the original raid were part of a unit investigating sexual crimes and offenses against children.
