Europe's Tallest Virgin Mary Statue Inaugurated in Poland

Poland unveiled Europe's tallest statue of the Virgin Mary on Saturday in the small village of Konotopie, with the 55.6-metre monument inaugurated on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — one of the most significant dates in the Catholic calendar. The white concrete structure, featuring an open-armed figure of Mary atop a crown-shaped 15-metre observation pedestal, surpasses even Rio de Janeiro's famous Christ the Redeemer, which reaches approximately 38 metres including its base.

The statue was blessed by Bishop Krzysztof Wetkowski during a ceremony attended by thousands of pilgrims and well-wishers, including former Polish President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Walesa. The monument's presence on August 15 — Poland's national holiday of the Armed Forces and a major feast day for the country's predominantly Catholic population — gave the inauguration added symbolic weight.

A Private Devotional Project

The statue was entirely funded by Polish businessman Roman Karkosik and his wife Grazyna, at a reported cost of around 100 million zloty — approximately 23 million euros. Construction of the reinforced concrete figure took 18 months and required moving some 60,000 tonnes of material. The 15-metre pedestal at the base of the statue is designed as an observation deck, allowing visitors to ascend and view the surrounding landscape.

The village of Konotopie, located in the Kujawy-Pomerania region of north-central Poland, had no particular prior claim to fame before the project began. The Karkosik family expressed their hope that the site would become a major pilgrimage destination and draw visitors from across Poland and beyond.

Landmark in Catholic Poland

Poland remains one of Europe's most devoutly Catholic countries, and large religious monuments have long carried deep cultural and national significance. The inauguration of the statue drew comparisons to other landmark Marian statues across the continent, none of which matches the scale of the new Konotopie monument. For the Catholic Church in Poland, the Assumption of Mary on August 15 is both a religious feast day and a powerful symbol of national identity.
