France Tests New M51.3 Ballistic Missile Launched from Nuclear Submarine
Macron Witnesses Historic Launch
French President Emmanuel Macron personally witnessed the first test launch of the new M51.3 ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine on Tuesday. The president observed the launch from the frigate Auvergne, calling it an exceptional technical achievement demonstrating France's nuclear deterrence capabilities.
New Chapter in French Nuclear Deterrence
The M51.3 is the latest upgrade to France's sea-launched ballistic missile programme. Fired from the nuclear submarine Le Vigilant, the test marks a significant modernisation of the French nuclear arsenal. Macron noted that only a very few countries in the world possess such capability.
The development involved a consortium of top French defence companies including DGA, CEA, Ariane Group, and Naval Group, working alongside the French Navy.
Strategic Significance
The successful test reinforces France's independent nuclear deterrent, the Force de Frappe. The M51.3 offers improved range, accuracy, and payload capacity compared to its predecessor. The test comes amid heightened tensions across Europe, with NATO allies increasing defence spending in response to Russian aggression.
European Context
France is the only EU member state with an independent nuclear arsenal. President Macron has previously raised the question of whether French nuclear deterrence could play a role in broader European defence, sparking debate among European leaders and security experts.
