Google Announces €13 Billion Investment in Finland Data Centers

Google on Tuesday announced it will invest €13 billion in data center facilities in Finland over the coming years, significantly expanding its European cloud computing infrastructure.

The investment represents Google's largest commitment to a single European country and will create thousands of jobs in construction, operation, and related sectors. Finland was chosen for its stable power grid, cold climate that reduces cooling costs, and abundant renewable energy from wind and hydro sources.

Google already operates one of its largest data centers in Hamina, Finland, a former paper mill converted into a server facility in 2011. The new investment will substantially expand this and potentially establish new sites across the country.

The announcement aligns with growing European demand for cloud services and pressure from EU regulators for tech companies to expand local data storage and processing capabilities. Google Cloud has been competing aggressively with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure for European business contracts.

Finnish Prime Minister welcomed the investment, saying it would strengthen Finland's position as a leading technology hub in Northern Europe and contribute significantly to the national economy.
