Lula Wins Fourth Term as Brazil's President in Runoff

1 min read

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won the runoff election against Flavio Bolsonaro and secured a historic fourth presidential term, The Guardian reported on Monday, October 26.

With nearly 99% of votes counted, Lula had 51.75% support against 48.25% for Bolsonaro, the 45-year-old son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

A reversal of the first round

The result is a precedent: since the late 1980s no Brazilian candidate has managed to overturn the outcome after losing the first round. In the first round in early October, Lula trailed Bolsonaro by 2.2 million votes.

Analysts name higher turnout in key regions as the main factor behind the reversal.

Lula's career

Lula, who has just turned 81, led Brazil twice, in 2003-2010, and returned to power after the 2022 election, defeating then-president Jair Bolsonaro. See more in our Politics section.
