Romania Finds Drone Debris with Live Warhead in Tulcea County, Scrambles F-16s

Romanian military disposal teams neutralized drone debris — including fragments containing a live explosive warhead — discovered along the Black Sea coast and in the border county of Tulcea on Friday, September 11. Two drone fragments were found on a beach in Tulcea County along the Ukrainian border, while two additional pieces were retrieved from Black Sea waters.

Naval specialists discovered an unexploded warhead among the maritime debris and conducted a controlled detonation to neutralize the hazard safely. The Romanian Air Force scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter in response to the threat, while the Department for Emergency Situations issued automated RO-Alert warnings to residents in the border area.

23rd Drone Airspace Incident This Year

The incident is Romania's 23rd drone-related airspace violation in 2026 — already surpassing the total 18 incidents recorded across all of 2022–2025 combined. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NATO member Romania has repeatedly found drone debris from Russian strikes on Ukrainian targets drifting across its territory, particularly around the Danube Delta and Black Sea coastline.

Bucharest has formally protested each incident to Moscow through NATO channels, while also significantly expanding its air defence posture along the eastern border. No casualties were reported in connection with Friday's discovery.
