More Than Half of Ukrainian Veterans Say the State Ignores Their Rights, Survey Finds
A new survey conducted among Ukrainian war veterans has revealed a troubling disconnect between the state's obligations to its defenders and the reality on the ground. More than 50% of respondents said they feel that government institutions ignore their rights and fail to provide adequate support.
Key Findings
The survey highlighted problems in several areas: inadequate rehabilitation services, delays in processing disability benefits, lack of affordable housing assistance, and insufficient mental health support. Many veterans reported having to fight bureaucratic battles just to access their entitled benefits.
Veterans's organizations have called on parliament to pass comprehensive legislation to strengthen protections for former military personnel. The issue has gained political importance as Ukraine approaches the winter campaign season with hundreds of thousands of veterans needing support.
Government Response
Government officials acknowledged the concerns but pointed to significant investments in veterans' programs over the past year. Critics argue these investments fall far short of what is needed given the scale of the conflict.
