What Would Change Under an AfD Government in Saxony-Anhalt

The AfD in Saxony-Anhalt is seeking a solo governing majority after this autumn's state elections — a historic first that would put Germany's classified-far-right party in control of a federal state. The Saxony-Anhalt branch is classified by Germany's domestic security agency as "confirmed right-wing extremist," yet it is polling well ahead of all other parties.

Immigration and Deportation

The party's central election slogan is "Deport from minute one!" Its programme calls for a "180-degree turn" in migration policy, with the stated goal of expelling as many illegal immigrants "as only possible." The AfD plans to introduce detention facilities specifically for deportees, impose a work requirement on asylum seekers, and set up special classes for refugee children — a measure that lawyers say could violate international and European law.

To address Germany's widely recognised labour shortage, the AfD proposes attracting back German professionals who emigrated abroad through financial incentives, a "return premium" and assistance with housing.

Security and Russia Policy

The party wants to create an auxiliary police force alongside the regular police, arguing the existing force is "overwhelmed" by its public order duties. In foreign policy — where German states have little formal authority — an AfD minister-president of Saxony-Anhalt could use the Bundesrat, Germany's upper chamber, to lobby for reducing sanctions against Russia and resuming closer relations with Moscow. The AfD has also proposed teaching Russian in schools and actively recruiting Russian-native speakers as teachers.

Regarding Ukraine, the AfD calls for a "return offensive" to send Ukrainian refugees home, though deportation decisions ultimately rest at the federal level.
