Far right

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sharply accused the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party of promoting ethnic cleansing in a heated Bundestag address, following controversial statements by AfD politicians about mass deportations.

Germany's BSW party, founded by Sahra Wagenknecht, faces growing criticism for aligning with the far-right AfD on certain policy positions, blurring the lines between left-wing populism and right-wing nationalism.

Analysis shows the AfD's record 43.8% in Saxony-Anhalt was driven not by immigration fears but by economic insecurity, desire for peace, and voter anger at Chancellor Merz's CDU. Two-thirds of workers voted AfD.

With Saxony-Anhalt's AfD, classified as 'confirmed far-right extremist', seeking a solo government majority, DW examines its radical plans including mass deportations, auxiliary police and a 180-degree reversal of migration policy.

Activists, unions, and churches in Germany face rising far-right threats as Saxony-Anhalt prepares for September 6 elections, with democratic networks losing funding and staff.

Germany's far-right AfD leads polls at 42% ahead of September state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, potentially making it the first German state where a party classified as confirmed right-wing extremist could govern.
