BSW Alliance Considers Cooperation with AfD in Saxony-Anhalt Coalition Talks

1 min read

The BSW regional branch in Saxony-Anhalt is considering whether to open dialogue with the AfD as coalition formation talks proceed following recent state elections, according to party sources.

Such a move would break the political firewall that mainstream German parties have maintained against formally cooperating with the AfD, which has been subject to domestic intelligence surveillance over its extremist elements.

BSW was founded in early 2024 by former Left Party members and established itself as a populist force with anti-establishment, anti-NATO and Ukraine-skeptical positions. Critics argue any BSW-AfD cooperation would normalize the far-right party and erode democratic consensus. BSW leadership has not ruled out cross-party talks on specific policy matters.
