In a significant move to bolster national security, Poland's Ministry of Defense has unveiled plans to expand the country's armed forces to a total of 500,000 personnel. This ambitious target underscores Warsaw's ongoing commitment to building one of the most formidable militaries in Europe.
In a recent interview, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Stanisław Wziątek detailed the strategic vision for the military's growth. According to Wziątek, the expanded force will consist of 300,000 professional soldiers and 200,000 highly trained reservists ready to be mobilized in emergencies.
"We assume that the army will number 500,000 military personnel—among which 300,000 are professional soldiers, and another 200,000 are reservists, those who will be the 'reserve' in case of an emergency," Wziątek stated. The Ministry of Defense expects to reach these benchmarks between 2030 and 2035.
This personnel surge aligns with Poland's aggressive financial investments in defense. In 2025, the nation secured the top position among NATO member states for defense expenditures as a percentage of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Despite a unified stance on the need for a stronger military, Polish leadership is currently fractured over how to finance these massive rearmament efforts. A central point of contention is the European Union's SAFE program, which would provide Poland with approximately €44 billion in loans for military upgrades.
President Karol Nawrocki recently vetoed the legislation that would have authorized Poland's participation in the EU initiative. As a countermeasure, Nawrocki introduced "SAFE 0%", an alternative rearmament program financed entirely through the national budget. This political standoff has polarized the nation, with public opinion split almost evenly between the two approaches.
Meanwhile, media reports indicate that the European Union is continuing its administrative work to formalize the loan package for Warsaw, regardless of the ongoing domestic dispute over the presidential veto.
