Zelensky Asks Rada to Extend Martial Law and Mobilisation to 29 January

1 min read

President Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted bills to the Verkhovna Rada to extend martial law and general mobilisation by another 90 days, to 29 January 2027, according to bill cards No. 16182 and No. 16183 on the parliament's website.

At present martial law and general mobilisation are in force until 05:30 on 31 October 2026. Under the previous decisions they have applied from 2 August to 31 October 2026. Martial law and general mobilisation have been in effect in Ukraine since 24 February 2022.

Security guarantees as the condition

In December 2025 Zelensky stressed that the war with Russia will not end until Ukraine receives effective security guarantees, and that until then martial law cannot end either. Asked whether martial law could be lifted during a ceasefire, he answered: "First of all, we all want the war to end, and then martial law will end. Only like that. But martial law will end at the moment when security guarantees appear in Ukraine. Without security guarantees, this war really will not end, we will not be able to recognise that it has ended, because there may be a risk of repeated aggression from such a neighbour."
